The Importance of the Mill Test Certificate (MTC)

For mission-critical industrial applications, a fastener is only as good as the paper behind it. The Mill Test Certificate (MTC) is the primary document that proves a product meets the specified chemical and mechanical requirements. In this guide, we break down how to read an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.

1. Material Identification & Heat Number

Every MTC must clearly state the material grade (e.g., SS 316) and the Heat Number. The Heat Number is the unique identifier for a specific batch of steel. This number must be traceable from the raw material stage to the finished fastener.

2. Chemical Composition Analysis

Verify that the levels of Carbon, Manganese, Phosphorus, Sulfur, Silicon, and specialized elements like Chromium, Nickel, and Molybdenum fall within the allowable ranges defined by the material standard (e.g., ASTM A193).

3. Mechanical Properties

Check the Tensile Strength, Yield Strength, Elongation, and Hardness values. These must meet or exceed the minimum requirements for the property class (e.g., Grade 8.8 or 10.9).

4. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

High-quality certificates will also include results from ultrasonic testing, eddy current testing, or magnetic particle inspection to ensure the fasteners are free from internal cracks or defects.
