Understanding the Process
Both methods use zinc to protect steel through 'sacrificial protection', but the application and durability differ significantly. #Zinc Plating (Electro-Galvanizing)
- **Process:** An electric current deposits a thin layer of zinc (typically 5-10 microns). - **Finish:** Bright, shiny, and smooth. Ideal for indoor hardware where appearance matters. - **Limitation:** Very thin layer; not suitable for prolonged outdoor exposure. #Hot Dip Galvanizing (HDG)
- **Process:** The fastener is dipped in molten zinc at 450°C, creating a thick metallurgical bond (50-100 microns). - **Finish:** Dull gray and slightly rough. The industry standard for outdoor infrastructure. - **Advantage:** Superior durability and 'self-healing' properties for scratches.Recommendation
If your fasteners will be exposed to rain or humidity, **Hot Dip Galvanizing** is the only reliable choice. Use zinc plating only for indoor or climate-controlled environments.PROJECT REQUIREMENTS?
